James Island is a barrier island situated just south of the Charleston peninsula. Originally founded by several tobacco plantation owners in the early 1700’s, James Island was always a desirable location due to it’s closeness to Downtown, it’s abundance of waterways, and having Folly Beach a short drive away. James Island has experienced growth in the past 20 years and is a pretty established real estate area with a good mixture of single family homes, multi-family, investor friendly areas, and luxury waterfront homes. On the northeast side of the island, you have most of the older communities along Harborview Road. A lot of these were built in the 1960’s and 1970’s and prices typically range in the high 200’s up to over 2 million for the waterfront homes on the Charleston Harbor. Some notable neighborhoods on the Charleston side of the island include: Lawton Bluff, Harbor Woods, Stiles Point Plantation, and Riverland Terrace. On the southern side of the island, you have some spectacular views of the Folly River and the marshes of that area, you can find a home on James Island and be within just a couple of miles to the beach!
